Chester Bowles
Bowles, Chester (1901–1986), a United States public official and advertising executive. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, and graduated from Yale in 1924. In 1929 he helped found Benton & Bowles, Inc., which became one of the nation's leading advertising agencies. He directed the Office of Price Administration (OPA) in World War II. Bowles, a Democrat, was governor of Connecticut, 1949–51, and ambassador to India and Nepal, 1951–53. Bowles was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1958. He was again ambassador to India, 1963–69.
