Kilment Efremovich Voroshilov

Voroshilov, Kliment Efremovich (1881–1969), a Russian army officer and Communist leader. He was a commander in the Red Army in the civil war that followed the Bolshevik takeover of power in 1917. From 1925 to 1940 he was supreme head of the army, becoming marshal in 1935. During World War II, he lost several battles and was relieved of command. In 1953, Voroshilov became chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet (head of state). He retired in 1960.

Voroshilov was born in the Ukraine, the son of a workman. He became a Bolshevik in 1903. From 1926 to 1960 he was a member of the Politburo, the policy-making body of the Communist party.
