Harry Hopkins
Hopkins, Harry (Lloyd) (1890–1946), a United States public official. He held various positions under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and was his personal friend and trusted adviser. He was born in Sioux City, Iowa, and graduated from Grinnell College. He became a social worker in New York City and New Orleans, Louisiana.
After Roosevelt became President in 1933 he made Hopkins head of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration. From 1935 to 1938 Hopkins was administrator of the Works Progress Administration. He became secretary of commerce in 1938, but resigned in 1940. In 1941 Hopkins headed the Lend-Lease program. During World War II he served in several war agencies and attended the chief war conferences.
