C. G. Memminger
Memminger Christopher Gustavus (1803–1888), Confederate secretary of the treasury, 1861–64. He was unable to create a workable system of finance. Memminger was born in Germany, and was taken to Charleston, South Carolina, as an infant. He graduated from South Carolina College (later the University of South Carolina) in 1819. For many years he was a state legislator and commissioner of schools in Charleston.
