Bushwackers

Bushwackers, a term applied during the Civil War to guerrilla fighters of the Confederate army. The word was used by Union soldiers to describe those guerrillas, especially in the Southwest, who engaged in private plunder. Before the Civil War the term was sometimes applied to "Border Ruffians," Missourians who attempted to establish slavery in the Kansas Territory. Originally the name was used to describe backwoodsmen.
