Battle of Missionary Ridge
Missionary Ridge, Battle of, November 25, 1863, a Union victory in the American Civil War. The battle took place on Missionary Ridge—about three miles (4.8 km) east of Chattanooga, Tennessee—where 40,000 Confederates under General Braxton Bragg were encamped. The attacking Union forces, consisting of 60,000 men, were commanded by General U. S. Grant.
The outcome of the Battle of Missionary Ridge was decided by General George Thomas's Army of the Cumberland, which exceeded Grant's orders by charging up the heights. They broke the Confederate defenses, and sent the enemy fleeing. Casualties were about 5,000 for each side.
