Edward Bates

Bates, Edward (1793–1869), a United States lawyer and statesman. He was born in Goochland County, Virginia, and went to St. Louis in 1814 to study law. He was a candidate for the Presidential nomination at the Republican national convention in 1860. Bates served as attorney general in Lincoln's cabinet, 1861–64.
