J.C. Pemberton
Pemberton, John Clifford (1814–1881), a United States and Confederate army officer. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated from West Point in 1837. Pemberton served in the Seminole War and in the Mexican War. He resigned in 1861 and joined the Confederate Army, becoming a lieutenant general in 1862. Defeated by General Grant and driven into Vicksburg, he surrendered that city after a long siege. After being exchanged, he resigned his lieutenant general's commission; for the rest of the war he served as inspector of ordnance with the rank of colonel.
