Barranquilla, Colombia, the capital of Atlántico department. The city lies on the Caribbean coast near the mouth of the Magdalena River and is a major center for river, ocean, and air transport. It is also a major industrial center, producing a wide range of consumer and light industrial goods. Colombia's first free trade zone (established 1958) is here. Institutions include the University of Atlántico. Barranquilla was founded in 1629.
