Geography of San Cristobal

San Cristóbal, Venezuela, the capital of Tachira state. It lies near the Colombian border, about 400 miles (640 km) southwest of Caracas, in the Cordillera de Mérida, some 2,700 feet (82Om) above sea level. San Cristóbal is the commercial center for Tachira, one of Venezuela's chief coffee-producing areas. The city is served by the Trans-Andean Highway and the airport at San Antonio, about 15 miles (24 km) to the west. San Cristóbal was founded by the Spanish in 1561.
