Geography of Concepcion

Concepción, Chile, the capital of Concepción Province. It lies on the Bío-Bío River near the Pacific Ocean. Concepción is a commercial and transportation center serving Chile's major agricultural region, the Central Valley. It is also an industrial city. The University of Concepción is here.

Concepción was founded as a Spanish outpost against Araucanian Indians in 1550 and remained a frontier settlement for several centuries. Throughout its history, the city has been devastated periodically by earthquakes, most recently in 1939 and 1960.
