Oruro, Bolivia, the capital of Oruro department, in the western part of the country. It is on a plateau 12,160 feet (3,710 m) above sea level. Oruro is a mining and railroad center. Tin, copper, silver, and tungsten are mined, and there is a university emphasizing engineering studies here. The city was founded in 1606.
