San Juan, Argentina, the capital of San Juan province. It lies in the foothills of the Andes, about 620 miles (1,000 km) northwest of Buenos Aires. San Juan is the trading center for an area producing wine grapes, other fruits, and cattle. The main industry is the making of wine. Spaniards from Chile founded San Juan in 1562.
