Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island, hou, a dependency of New South Wales, Australia, in the Tasman Sea 435 miles (700 km) northeast of Sydney. It was discovered by a British naval lieutenant, H. L. Ball, in 1788. Lord Howe Island is of volcanic origin, and has an area of about five square miles (13 km2). The island has been a popular Australian summer resort for many years.
