Craters of the Moon National Monument
Craters of the Moon National Monument, a unit of the National Park System in southern Idaho. The monument's volcanic landscape was formed by molten rock that forced its way through cracks in the earth's surface over the course of the last 15,000 years. Numerous lava formations, including craters, cones, and caves, can be found throughout the monument, which covers 53,545 acres (21,669 hectares). The area was established as a national monument in 1924.
