Crater Lake National Park
Crater Lake National Park, a unit of the National Park System at the edge of the Cascade Range in southwestern Oregon. The park covers 183,227 acres (74,149 hectares). Except for the Pumice Desert in the north and Crater Lake itself, the park is almost entirely covered by coniferous forests. The park's main feature is Crater Lake. With a depth of more than 1,900 feet (579 m), Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. The lake was formed nearly 7,000 years ago when Mount Mazama erupted so violently that it collapsed, creating a massive basin, which gradually filled with water from rain and melted snow. The park was established in 1902.
