Geography of Montpelier
Montpelier, Vermont, the state capital and the seat of Washington County. It lies on the Winooski River near the Green Mountains in northern Vermont. Government employment and the insurance and granite industries largely support the city. The Vermont Historical Society Museum and the Thomas Waterman Art Gallery are here. Montpelier was settled in the 1780's and made the capital in 1805. It has the council-manager form of government.
