Isthmus of Tehuantepec
Tehuantepec, Isthmus of, a tropical lowland in southern Mexico. It is the narrowest stretch of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. From the Bay of Campeche in Veracruz state to the Gulf of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca it is as little as 120 miles (190 km) wide. The isthmus is sparsely inhabited except along the coasts. It is crossed by a highway and a main railway line and affords a potential canal route.
