Labrador Current
Labrador Current, an ocean current that starts in the Arctic Ocean and flows southward into the Atlantic between the Greenland and Labrador coasts. During spring and summer it carries with it many icebergs from the Greenland glaciers. The current helps keep Labrador icebound and the New England coast cool several months each year. Southeast of Newfoundland, in the Grand Bank, the Labrador Current merges with the North Atlantic Current, a branch of the Gulf Stream. This mingling of warm and cold water produces dense fogs that are hazardous to navigation.
