Lake Winnipeg
Winnipeg, Lake, a lake in Manitoba, Canada, 35 miles (56 km) north of the city of Winnipeg. The lake is 55 miles (89 km) wide and extends north and south for about 240 miles (386 km). Its total area is 9,417 square miles (24,390 km2). There are important fisheries and shipping on the lake and major stands of timber around it. Summer resorts are on its southern shore. Among the many rivers flowing into Lake Winnipeg are the Saskatchewan in the north and the Red and Winnipeg in the south. The lake's outlet is the Nelson River, which flows to Hudson Bay. Lake Winnipeg was discovered in 1733 by Sieur de la Vérendrye. It is a remnant of an ancient glacial lake named Lake Agassiz.
