Bab el Mandeb, a narrow strait of strategic importance on the Suez Canal shipping route, linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It separates Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula from Ethiopia and Djibouti on the African continent. The strait is about 19 miles (31 km) wide.
