Mount Carmel
Carmel, Mount, a mountain ridge in northwestern Israel. It extends 13 miles (21 km) from the Valley of Jezreel to the Mediterranean port of Haifa, reaching 1,791 feet (546 m). Biblical accounts associate Elijah and Elisha with the region. Early Christian anchorites (hermits) lived in caves on the mount. The first Carmelite monastery was founded here in 1155.
