Geography of Macedonia

Macedonia is a country in southeastern Europe.

Macedonia, sometimes called Macedon, an ancient kingdom in the Balkan Peninsula at the northwest corner of the Aegean Sea. It occupied an area that today is part of Greece, Bulgaria, and the Republic of Macedonia. The region is generally mountainous; in several areas peaks rise to more than 6,500 feet (1,980 m) above sea level. Fertile lowlands occur at the head of the Gulf of Therma, into which flow the Axios (Vardar) and Aliakmon rivers.

At the end of the Balkan Wars (1912-13), Macedonia was partitioned among Greece, Serbia, and Bulgaria. The region that went to Serbia became part of Yugoslavia; it seceded in 1991 and became the Republic of Macedonia.
