Geography of Arcadia-Greece

Arcadia, a historic region in the central Peloponnesus, Greece, surrounded entirely by mountains. In ancient times it was an especially isolated part of Greece, inhabited by shepherds and peasants who worshiped nature gods. The name Arcadia came to suggest a picturesque land of rustic innocence and simplicity. Philip Sidney and other writers have used Arcadia as the setting for pastoral prose and poetry.

The Arcadian dialect was one of the three early Greek dialects and was spoken throughout the Peloponnesus before the Dorian invasion of about 1100 B.C.
