Geography of Clermont-Ferrand

Clermont-Ferrand, France, the capital of Puy-de-Dōme Department, about 85 miles (137 km) west of Lyon. It is an industrial center, producing mainly rubber, tires, and chemicals. The city has a cathedral, begun in 1248, and a university, founded in 1808. Clermont-Ferrand was formed in 1731 by the merger of Clermont and Montferrand. At the Council of Clermont in 1095 Pope Urban II called for the first Crusade.
