Geography of Angers

Angers, France, a river port and the capital of Maine-et-Loire Department. It lies on the Maine River, a tributary of the Loire, in the western part of the country. Among the items made here are paper products, electronic equipment, textiles, and Anjou wines. Nearby are the largest slate quarries in France. A collection of medieval tapestries, including the notable Apocalypse series, are in a 13th-century chateau here.

Angers was settled as early as the first century B.C. by the Romans. It became prominent after 870 as the chief residence of the counts of Anjou. In 1154 it came into possession of the Plantagenet kings of England, who were heir to the House of Anjou. Angers was annexed to France in 1204.
