Rennes, France, the capital of Illeet-Vilaine department. The city, at the junction of the Ille and Vilaine rivers, is 190 miles (305 km) southwest of Paris. Rennes is an industrial, commercial, and intellectual center of Brittany. Industries include printing, bookbinding, and the preparation of leather and manufacturing of leather goods. Rennes was the capital of Brittany in the Middle Ages. Its university is a center for Celtic studies.
