Geography of Grenoble
Grenoble France, the capital of the Isère department. It lies at the foot of the Alps on the Isère and Drac rivers, 60 miles (97 km) southeast of Lyon. Grenoble is an industrial, commercial, and transportation center and the gateway to many alpine resorts. In 1339, the University of Grenoble became a leading French educational center and remained so until, beginning in 1970, it was reorganized into four separate universities. Grenoble dates from at least Roman times and has been an important city since the 12th century when it was the capital of Dauphiné, an independent region. In 1968 it was the site of the Winter Olympics.
