The Tiber River

Tiber River, (Italian:Tevere), a river in central Italy. It begins in the Apennines of eastern Tuscany and flows generally southward through Umbria and Latium, past Rome to the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is about 250 miles (400 km) long. Among the principal tributaries are the Nera and Aniene rivers. The Tiber is connected to the Arno River by the Chiana River and canal.

The flow of the Tiber fluctuates greatly. In late winter and early spring the river is swollen by rainwater; in summer it is nearly dry. Below Rome there were once extensive marshes; however, since the late 1800's the area has been drained and made suitable for agriculture. Except near the mouth, the Tiber is not navigable.
