The Tagus River

Tagus River,(Spanish: Tojo Portuguese: Tejo), a major river of the Iberian Peninsula. The source of the Tagus is in the mountains of eastern Spain, and the river flows some 565 miles (909 km) south and west to the Atlantic Ocean at Lisbon. For much of its course, the Tagus flows through deep gorges; only the lower part is navigable. Principal cities along the Tagus are Toledo and Lisbon; Madrid is in the river's basin. The river's mouth is spanned by one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe.
