Sosnowiec, Poland, a city in Slaskie province, about 155 miles (250 km) southwest of Warsaw. Sosnowiec is an industrial city in the heart of Upper Silesia, Poland's chief coal-mining area. Its factories produce primarily iron and steel, heavy machinery, and chemicals. With the third partition of Poland (1795) Sosnowiec, then a small town, became part of Prussia. In 1815 the Congress of Vienna granted the town, with most of Poland, to Russia. It remained part of Russia until the re-creation of Poland in 1919. The city has undergone large-scale industrialization since World War II.
