Geography of Lodz
Lodz, Poland, the capital of Lodzkie province. Lodz is the second largest city in Poland. It is in central Poland, 70 miles (113 km) southwest of Warsaw. Lodz is a major textile manufacturing city. Electrical equipment, chemicals, and machinery are also produced. Lodz has many institutions of higher learning, including a university, a technical university, and academies devoted to medicine, film, music, and fine arts. Lodz was chartered in 1423. The city came under Prussian control in 1793 and under Russian control in 1815. Lodz developed rapidly as a large industrial center during the last half of the 19th century. The city reverted to Poland after World War I. It was occupied by the Germans during both world wars.
