Geography of Galicia
Galicia, a region in southeastern Poland and the western portion of Ukraine. Lumbering and farming are the main occupations; oil and natural gas are the leading resources. The chief cities are Kraków, Poland, and Lvov, Ukraine.
Eastern Galicia was Russian until the mid-1300's, when it became Polish. In 1772 Austria gained most of Galicia. It was Polish again after World War I, but disputes over the eastern section led to war between Poland and Russia in 1920. The Treaty of Riga (1921) confirmed Polish rights. After World War II, eastern Galicia was awarded to the Soviet Union, of which Ukraine was then a part.
