Geography of Bremerhaven

Bremerhaven, Germany, a city in the state of Bremen. It is on the Weser River estuary near the North Sea about 30 miles (48 km) north of the city of Bremen. Bremerhaven is one of the largest fishing ports in Europe and one of the leading seaports of Germany. It handles mainly industrial raw materials and tropical products and has shipbuilding and engineering works. The National Maritime Museum is here.

Bremerhaven was founded in 1827 as an outer, deepwater, port for Bremen. It was absorbed in 1939 by the neighboring city of Wesermünde and was known by that name until 1947, when the combined municipality was renamed Bremerhaven.
