Grunion

Grunion, or California Grunion, a small ocean food fish. The slim, light-colored body, five to eight inches (12.5 to 20 cm) long, has a silvery stripe down each side from gills to tail. The mouth is toothless. Grunion are found only along the southern California coast and the Pacific coast of Lower California. On certain moonlit nights from March to August the fish come ashore at high tide to spawn.

The California grunion is Leuresthes tenuis of the silversides family. Atherinidae.
