Pipefish
Pipefish, a small fish related to the sea horse. It is found in both fresh and salt water in many parts of the world, including the United States. The pipefish has a long, slender body covered with rings of bony plates. It feeds by sucking small water animals into its tubelike, toothless snout. The female deposits its eggs in a special area—usually a pouch—on the abdomen of the male. The eggs hatch and the young develop on the male's body. There are 150 known species, ranging in length from 1 inch (2.5 cm) to 18 inches (45.7 cm).
Pipefish belong to the family Syngnathidae.
