Sand Lance (Ammodytidae): Characteristics & Habitat

Sand Lance

Sand Lance

Sand Lance, or Sand Eel, a small marine fish found in schools in shallow waters of northern seas. The sand lance has an elongated body, a pointed head, and a prominent lower jaw. It is metallic bluish-green above and silver below and grows to eight inches (20 cm) long. It burrows in the sand to escape predators. Of the 12 species, 3 are found in the United States—the American, northern, and Pacific sand lances.

Sand lances make up the sand lance family, Ammodytidae. The American sand lance is Ammodytes americanus; the northern sand lance, A. dubius; the Pacific sand lance, A. hexapterus.
