Quinoa

Quinoa, an annual herb native to Chile, Peru, and parts of Mexico. The seeds are a good source of protein, calcium, and phosphorus. The seeds are used in soups, made into beer, and ground into meal for making porridge and cakes. They are also used as poultry feed. The plant averages three feet (90 cm) in height, has triangular leaves, and bears inconspicuous, greenish flowers. Quinoa is also cultivated in the western United States and New Zealand.

Quinoa is Chenopodium quinoa of the goosefoot family, Chenopodiaceae.
