Wandering Jew

Wandering Jew

Wandering Jew, the common name of three perennial herbs with creeping or trailing stems. The wandering Jew is a popular houseplant, often kept in hanging baskets. The plant has oval leaves and small flowers. It is propagated from cuttings of the roots or stems, and thrives in rich, wet soil. One species, native to Mexico, has small, rose-purple flowers. Its leaves are purplish below and green above with silver-white stripes. The two other species are native to South America; they have green or purplish leaves and bear small white flowers.

Wandering Jews belong to the spiderwort family, Commelinaceae. The Mexican species is Zebrina pendula. The South American species are Tradescantia albiflora and T. fluminensis.
