Sweet William, a hardy garden flower of the pink family. Fringed blossoms are clustered at the top of a strong stem, generally one to two feet (30 to 60 cm) high. Dwarf varieties may be only two to four inches (5 to 10 cm) high. The flowers are odorless and may be red, white, or purple, or a combination of these colors. Sweet William is native to Eurasia and has been cultivated for several centuries. There are many garden varieties. Sweet William is a perennial, but many of the improved varieties offered by nurseries are short-lived and are therefore grown as biennials.

Sweet William is Dianthus barbatus of the family Caryophyllaceae.
