Pyxie Plant (Flowering Moss): Care & Characteristics

Pyxie

Pyxie

Pyxie, or Flowering Moss, a cushion-forming evergreen plant grown in rock gardens. Although it looks like a moss, the pyxie is a true flowering plant. It is native to pine barrens from New Jersey to South Carolina. The trailing stems are densely covered with very narrow leaves about 1/4 inch (6 mm) long. The plant bears many tiny, bell-shaped flowers that are white or pinkish in color.

The pyxie is Pyxidanthera barbulata of the dia-pensia family, Diapensiaceae.
