Impatiens
Impatiens, a genus of colorful plants. There are more than 500 species, most of which are found in tropical and temperate regions. The plants bear showy flowers and oval leaves. The common name of some species is touch-me-not, referring to the fact that the seedpods burst when touched, scattering the seeds.
The spotted touch-me-not, or jewelweed, is a wildflower found in wetlands from southern Canada south to Georgia and west to Oklahoma. It has drooping flowers that are orange-yellow with splotches of reddish brown. Impatiens species popular as garden plants include the garden balsam and the busy Lizzie, used as ground cover or along borders. The garden balsam bears cup-shaped flowers that are white, yellow, or dark red. The busy Lizzie has pink, red, white, purple, or variegated flowers.
Impatiens belong to the family Balsaminaceae. The spotted touch-me-not is Impatiens capensis; garden balsam, I. balsamina; busy Lizzie, I. wallerana.
