Peyote: Properties, History, and Traditional Uses

Peyote

Peyote

Peyote, or Mescal, a cactus of the southwestern United States and Mexico. Most of the plant grows below ground and resembles a carrot root in size and shape. The exposed top is called a “button.” The button contains mescaline, a hallucinatory drug. Certain Indian groups chew or swallow peyote buttons during religious ceremonies to induce mystical experiences.

The peyote is Lophophora williamsii of the cactus family, Cactaceae.
