Fireweed
Fireweed, a perennial plant that grows in temperate areas throughout the Northern Hemisphere. The fireweed grows from two to eight feet (60–240 cm) tall and bears narrow, pointed leaves and a long, showy spike of purplish-pink flowers. The fruits are long, slender, erect pods bearing many seeds, each having a tuft of down at one end. Carried far and wide by the wind, the seeds tend to sprout particularly in burned-over areas, therefore the name fireweed. Because of the shape of its leaves and the appearance of its seeds, which resemble those of the willow tree, the plant is known also as the great willow herb.
The fireweed is Epilobium angustifolium of the evening primrose family, Onagraceae.
