Corn Cockle (Agrostemma githago): Identification, Poison & Control

Cockle

Cockle

Cockle, or Corn Cockle, a weed belonging to the pink family. The common cockle is a native of Europe and western Asia, but is found in many parts of the world. It grows from one to three feet (30 to 90 cm) high and bears a large rose-red or purple blossom. It grows in grain fields and weedy areas. Grain harvested from fields containing cockle must be screened with a sieve to eliminate cockle seeds, which are poisonous.

The cockle is Agrostemma githago of the family Caryophyllaceae.
