Mate

Mat, or Paraguay Tea, a South American evergreen tree or large shrub. It is grown chiefly in Paraguay and Brazil. The plant has tooth-edged, oval leaves about five inches (13 cm) long; and small, reddish-brown fruit. Its leaves, when dried and ground, are made into a stimulating greenish beverage (mat) that is used in place of tea. The beverage is popular in South America.

The mat is Ilex paraguariensis of the holly family, Aquifoliaceae.

Mate plants have tooth-edged leaves that are used in place of tea.
