Cold Frame

Cold Frame, a device used to protect seedlings or to start seeds growing in the early spring. It consists of a wooden frame sunk into the ground and covered with a removable glass top. The sun supplies heat by day and the earth beneath the glass retains this heat for the night. A heated cold frame is called a hotbed.
