Radical (chemistry)

Radical, in chemistry, two or more atoms of different elements that behave as a single group in many chemical reactions. A radical can form part of a number of compounds without itself undergoing a change. Thus the carboxyl radical (COOH-) is found in many organic acids, and the hydroxyl radical (OH-) in all alcohols. Each radical has its own valence.
