Collodion

Collodion, a solution of cellulose nitrate in alcohol and ether. Collodion is a dense, colorless, and usually transparent liquid. It burns very quickly. When collodion dries, it forms a transparent, flexible film.

In medicine, collodion has been used for covering small wounds. An important early use of collodion was in wet-plate photography. In this process, a plate of glass or metal was coated with a mixture of collodion and a light-sensitive compound. While the coating was still wet, the plate was placed in the camera, exposed, and then developed.
