Lake (chemistry)
Lake, in chemistry, an insoluble coloring substance formed by chemically combining a dye with a metallic salt called a mordant. Lakes are commonly mixed with chalk, kaolin, gypsum, or some other carrier to make them more opaque and form lighter colors. Lakes are used in printing inks, lacquers, and artists' colors, and in printing calico and dyeing silk.
